This is the school of choice for parents looking for successful and effective provision for students with a wide range of additional needs. The unique team of highly qualified and experienced staff deliver individual programmes that enable pupils to achieve their potential. The Independent Inspectorate 2011 report said, “Some exceptional results were obtained by pupils previously identified as having special educational needs. ”
Hurst Lodge has a holistic approach to the teaching of pupils with Learning Support Needs. The department is staffed by experienced teachers who are all fully qualified in teaching children with specific learning difficulties. The staff also cater for pupils with a variety of difficulties ranging from: those students who need an additional input to improve their grades at GCSE, to pupils who require more long term intervention.
In addition to teaching staff the department also has the services of a speech therapist, educational psychologist and several learning support assistants.
Children who are diagnosed as having learning difficulties are given individual forty-five minute lessons, according to need. Pupils who require more intensive help can receive up to five lessons per week or more if specifically requested. Each child has a tailored, cumulative teaching programme to address their individual needs and to promote their learning. This is monitored by an Individual Education Plan which is reviewed twice a year.
There are computers, Kindles ,voice recorders and iPads in the department, which the pupils use to enhance their learning. The use of assistive technology is encouraged.
The aim of the Learning Support Department is to ensure that skills and confidence are improved and transferred back to the classroom so that pupils can achieve their potential.
