Thank you for your interest in our school. There is, of course, no substitute for visiting us and if you can we would encourage you to come and have a look around.

Most Parents who choose Hurst Lodge for their children do so because of our distinctive approach to education and its warm family atmosphere. Like any other good school, our pupils take a range of exams and achieve excellent results and we particularly pride ourselves in enabling each young person to achieve their potential.  We delight in celebrating a large range of different achievements, whether through the attainment of excellent academic and vocational qualifications, or through the development of leadership and life skills.  At Hurst Lodge we believe that education is about developing the foundations for making a life as well as for making a living and although academic results may act as an entrée to a future career; a good education is more than this.

I am sure you will agree that it is becoming increasingly difficult for young people today to chart their futures in terms of traditional career patterns.  For this reason it is essential that they are made aware of their many talents and helped to develop them as it is highly likely that their future jobs will demand they possess a “portfolio” of skills. Furthermore, it is important that in a rapidly changing world, the internal resources of our young people are made as adaptable and resilient as their external qualifications.

Hurst Lodge is by design a small school which offers an intimacy and community often absent in larger establishments.  The size of the school is not a limiting factor.  On the contrary we find that it offers all pupils the chance to try out a wide range of activities to establish what suits them best and to develop a friendship base across age ranges.  An enthusiastic staff supports each child’s learning, enabling them to work at their own pace and ability level. We encourage an active dialogue with our parents to ensure that together we offer the support children need as soon as any issue surfaces. Ultimately, experience tells us that children who are happy at school learn better and face the future with optimism.

Set in 20 acres of parkland close to Sunningdale and Ascot railway stations and London and its major airports

We also believe that the challenges of the next 50 years will demand the best of us and that C. S. Lewis’s phrase: “While science may lead us to truth only the imagination can lead us to meaning”, is an important insight.

So...at Hurst Lodge we seek to inspire curiosity and imagination and encourage our children to experience a rich cultural life, encompassing creative and performance arts, science and citizenship, developing leadership and teamwork skills and instilling in them a joy of education which we hope will be sustained throughout their lives. We also believe in the importance of underpinning this by making the connection between ourselves and the natural world real. This is why the Hurst Lodge community of staff and pupils have embarked together on a journey of exploration by undertaking a programme of integrating the school’s operations into the learning experience.  We are collaborating in this with the award-winning Eden Project in Cornwall, with whom we will be implementing a carbon and waste reduction programme with special emphasis on reducing and replacing our reliance on fossil fuels and looking at alternative technologies and managing these ourselves. In September 2010 we will commence growing some of our own food and have established a smallholding to give our young people a greater understanding of the things so many take for granted.
