Hurst Lodge School

The House System

Hurst Lodge operates a ‘House’ System.  The pupils compete for a cup which is awarded at the end of the year.

There are three Houses:

Stainer (blue)
Fonteyn (yellow)
De Valois  (red)

When pupils and staff join the school they will be placed in a House.

When they get stars or credits they win points for the House and are publicly commended.  This is a chance to celebrate success.  When they get D- Marks or minuses they lose points.

D- Marks and Order Marks may be given to pupils for poor work and/or conduct.

A minus is one negative house point given for minor offences such as work outstandingly late or missing kit

A D-Mark is the accumulation of three minuses or may be given outright for more serious offences such as rudeness, bullying or lying.

An Order- Mark is the accumulation of three D-Marks and similarly can be awarded outright for serious misdemeanours.  If they get three Order-Marks, they may be permanently excluded.

Each House has a Staff House Tutor and a House Captain who is a member of the Sixth form.  The House Captain will organise events and teams.  Pupils play the other Houses at sports such as Field and Track Athletics, Football, Swimming, Netball and Rounders. They also participate in academic competitions such as Poetry, Verse and Prose, Mathematics, Science and General Knowledge.  They participate in Performing Arts talent shows and Music, Drama and Choreography competitons, the Boat and Pancake Races.  The winner will be the House that scores the highest total of points.  The winning House gets a cup at Open Day.

There are House meetings every other week.  Staff must enter stars/credits/minuses and D-Marks onto the computerized system by Friday each week.  Personal Tutors can use this system to assess pupils progress and respond accordingly.
