Art is a visual communication and expression of ideas using many different practical skills and media. The aim at Hurst Lodge is to foster a breadth and depth of study, allowing pupils of differing strengths and interests to develop imaginative and individual work. Freedom of choice and independent thinking are encouraged throughout Years 7 to 13.
Schemes of work are designed to respond to pupils growing interests and opportunities arising from gallery visits or current exhibitions. Students are able to visit and take inspiration from our A Level and GCSE exhibitions within the school environment. This flexibility produces a high standard of work by engaging students in their own learning process. Some will always need more guidance in their choice of media or subject. Some however have the maturity to develop more ambitious working practices independently from KS3 and this is always encouraged.
At KS3, drawing from direct observation in a wide range of media forms an important part of each unit. From studying the work of artists, craftspeople, designers and different cultures, students can develop their own work into a final outcome and learn to express concepts in a fluent visual manner. The skills learned in these years prepare those who choose to take Art, Photography or Textiles GCSE in Year 10.
The number of Year 9 students opting for GCSE Photography has substantially increased in recent years. The department now has internet and digital resources as well as a fully equipped black and white chemical darkroom.
We continue to enter KS3 students for the Independent Schools Association Art Competition every year, and have won a number of prizes. The independent thinking and original ideas coming from the Hurst Lodge students were very evident in this success.
