Meet Bernard

There are those moments when you just want to turn back the clock and take back everything that has been said.  The moment when you rashly said “We need more Buff Orpingtons”.  When the new batch of Buffs were put into the back of the car, ready for transporting to Hurst Lodge a Light Sussex rooster got in and wouldn't get out.  We were told that the chickens had bonded and we were asked "Do you mind taking him as well?”   It is this rooster that has become “Bernard”.

Bernard likes pasta. Actually all the chickens like pasta. Bernard particularly likes spaghetti – the wholemeal kind, chopped up, because if you leave it long he trips over it.  He will eat fusilli if he has to but does not like penne. He is the most indecisive bird. Bernard can’t cope with two bowls because he worries that there might be something better in the other one and subsequently spends most of his time scuttling between the two bowls to check, by which time the other more savvy birds have eaten most of it.  Bernard has taken to the chicken coop at school. He rather likes it, he can strut his stuff, he’s bigger than the other chickens and is rather proud of his newly acquired status as ‘top bird’.
